Summary

1) Project overview: This Tokyo Metropolitan Government subsidy helps medical institutions within the metropolis improve the systems they need to accept foreign patients, so that foreign patients can safely consult medical institutions across language and cultural barriers. The scheme is implemented based on the 'Tokyo Metropolitan Government Foreign Patient Reception System Improvement Support Subsidy Grant Guideline', and FY2026 applications are now open. Eligible expenses are those incurred for the relevant improvements between the grant-decision date and 31 March 2027. Applications must be filed through the jGrants subsidy application system; the required forms are posted on jGrants. Applicants must consult the 'FY2026 Foreign Patient Reception Support Subsidy Office Procedures Handbook' before applying. 2) Target applicants: Eligible are medical institutions in Tokyo (including clinics) that meet at least one of: (1) institutions designated as a 'hub-type medical institution accepting foreign patients'; (2) institutions considering applying to become a 'hub-type' institution; (3) institutions that reported 'can accept' for at least one foreign language in the Medical Functions Information Report AND, during the last three months, served ≥180 foreign patients (hospitals) or ≥45 (clinics) in foreign languages. Institutions that have ever obtained JMIP certification by the Japan Medical Education Foundation are excluded. Institutions that have previously received this subsidy are not eligible (except where an institution that received the subsidy on or before Reiwa-1 applies for the first time for expense category (f) 'staff language improvement'). 3) Eligible expenses / subsidy content: Six expense categories (a)–(f): (a) Multilingual support tools — making/installing phrasebooks, point-and-show tools, translator/interpreter-equipped tablet devices, etc. (smartphones excluded); (b) multilingual translation of hospital documents — questionnaires, exam-explanation materials, staff name tags, etc.; (c) multilingualization of signage; (d) multilingualization of websites; (e) systems for accepting foreign patients — multilingual appointment systems, systems for tracking foreign-patient receptions; (f) staff language improvement — medical interpreter training, correspondence courses, etc. 4) Subsidy rate / cap / schedule / application points: Base amount = 1,300,000 yen; subsidy rate = 1/2 (max 650,000 yen). Deadline: Friday 24 July 2026 (must arrive by). Submission via jGrants (URL: https://www.jgrants-portal.go.jp/subsidy/a0WJ200000CDYkiMAH).
